Abdominal Ultrasound Scan:

An abdominal ultrasound scan is generally carried out to view structures inside the abdomen with the use of sound waves.
This type of imaging test may be used to diagnose or rule out many other health conditions and your doctor may recommend this test if you have a problem in any of these body areas:

  • Gallbladder
  • Intestines
  • Blood vessels in the abdomen
  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen

As well as the above, this type of ultrasound scan can also assist your doctor in making evaluations relative to the causes of any stomach pain or bloating, and can help them to check for liver disease, tumours, kidneys stones, as well as many other afflictions.

Kidneys and Bladder Ultrasound Scan:

A scan of the kidneys and bladder is more commonly known in Medicine as a renal ultrasound and is carried out to assess your kidneys, ureters (small muscular tubes that join the kidneys with the bladder) and urinary bladder. This type of scan is beneficial for both men and women and can help in detecting fluid collection, kidneys or urinary tract infection, cysts, tumours, kidney disease and obstructions such as kidney stones.
You may need a kidney scan if your healthcare provider thinks you may have abnormal kidney function or may need surgery for a kidney problem. They will use the scan to see how well blood is flowing in your kidneys, as the scan can also be used to see any blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels.

It can also be used to diagnose:

  • The amount of functioning kidney disease
  • Blood flow to the kidneys
  • Possible narrowing of the renal arteries
  • Rejection of a transplanted kidney

Testicular Ultrasound Scan:

A testicular or scrotal ultrasound scan is usually carried out upon referral from a GP when the patient has noticed non-painful swelling or a lump, or a change in the shape or texture and if the GP thinks it might be cancerous. The scan is a painless procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the inside of your testicle. During this ultrasound, the specialist is able to determine the position and size of the abnormality in your testicle, and it is one of the main ways of finding out whether a lump is cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). The test also provides a clear indication of whether the lump is in the testicle or separate within the scrotum, and whether it’s solid or filled with fluid. If there is a fluid filled lump or collection around the testis, this usually points to it being harmless. However, a more solid lump is often a sign that the swelling is of a cancerous nature.

Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan:

This type of scan is generally carried out for the evaluation of any lumps or nodules found on or near the thyroid gland, so it is particularly useful for diagnosing suspected thyroid disease. It can be used to establish if any mass is connected to the thyroid itself or another part of the body. Whilst this scan gives the ability to look at a range of issues, it cannot diagnose an underactive or overactive thyroid or if the lumps/nodules are cancerous.

On the whole, a thyroid and neck ultrasound scan can be performed to assess the following:

  • Swelling of the salivary glands
  • Check the appearance of the thyroid nodule
  • Lumps arising from the neck
  • Signs of lymphadenopathy
  • History of thyroid problems

Hernia Ultrasound Scan:

A hernia most often occurs when a fatty or soft tissue, bowel or an organ protrudes through a weakness of the abdominal wall or groin into surrounding tissues. Therefore, the scan will diagnose and assess the extent of the issue by looking at the following:

  • The type of hernia – some types of hernia are more likely to become strangulated or cause a bowel obstruction than others.
  • The content of your hernia – if the hernia itself contains a part of your bowel, muscle or other tissue, then there may be a risk of strangulation or obstruction.
  • Your symptoms and the impact on your daily life – if your symptoms are severe or getting worse, and if the hernia is affecting your ability to carry out your normal activities, then surgery may be recommended.
  • Your general health – if this is poor, then surgery may be too great a risk.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Scan:

This type of scan can be carried out to diagnose many conditions and generally is used to produce images of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints throughout the body. It is particularly useful for identifying causes of pain, and muscle & tendon tears.
There are various options available within the musculoskeletal scan range, namely:

  • Upper Limb Scan
  • Lower Limb Scan
  • Lumps & Bumps Scan
  • Neck Ultrasound
  • Groin & Hernia Scan
